CAN FILLINGS HELP YOU?
Dental fillings are one of the most common treatments around, with almost every adult having at least one filling at some point in their lives. One of the reasons why so many people opt to get dental fillings is that they can treat a huge range of issues, including:
- Cracked teeth
- Chipped teeth
- Gapped teeth
- Tooth decay
- Cavities
- Tooth discolouration
Our tooth-coloured fillings are particularly valued for those looking to restore a damaged tooth that’s visible when they smile.
ABOUT THE PROCESS
It may sound scary, but having dental fillings fitted is actually pretty straightforward. We will completely numb the area so that you don’t experience any pain or discomfort during the procedure. Once this has taken effect, we will go in with a drill to remove the decayed area of the tooth, or your old amalgam filling, and fill the hole with a composite resin (similar to what is used for composite bonding), which will be colour-matched to your tooth for a completely natural look.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do dental fillings last?
This depends on the type of filling you opt for. There are a few options when it comes to fillings, including:
- Composite (tooth coloured) fillings
- Porcelain fillings
- Gold fillings
- Amalgam fillings
Whilst all offer their individual benefits, they don’t all have the same lifespan. For example, composite (or white coloured) fillings don’t tend to last quite as long as Amalgam (silver) fillings. That said, they are a much more popular option as they offer a more discreet solution that are harder to notice in the mouth.
Do fillings hurt?
Although the thought of having a filling may be daunting, you shouldn’t feel any pain during the procedure. We offer local anaesthetic to ensure you are comfortable throughout the process, and although it may sting a little to receive, you should be able to relax for the rest of your time with us, pain-free.
What do fillings do?
A build-up of plaque, caused by excess carbohydrates and sugary foods, can sometimes lead to cavities in the teeth. This is because the bacteria found in plaque can turn acidic and break down the surface of the tooth, leaving small holes in the tooth’s hard layer. They can cause a lot of pain and even lead to infection if left untreated.
In order to avoid infections, it’s important that these holes are filled – and that’s what fillings do. They are designed to repair cavities to precent pain and stop infection.
What is the safest tooth filling material?
There is a lot of speculation about the safety of Amalgam (silver) fillings, as it is widely believed that they contain harmful amounts of mercury, however this isn’t the case.
Silver fillings are perfectly safe and offer a very durable and long-lasting solution for fillings. Whilst Amalgam fillings do contain some mercury, it is not unsafe amounts and in fact provides an important binding material to ensure the filling stays in situ for years. It is an excellent hard-wearing option, much more durable than composite fillings.
Here at Finsbury Dental, we only use safe and certified materials for our fillings, and our team are more than happy to discuss the different options available to you.
